What Happened on South Georgia Street?

At about 1:05 a.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Amarillo police officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of South Georgia Street on a report of a multi-vehicle crash, according to KFDA NewsChannel 10 and ABC 7 Amarillo.

Investigators say a passenger car traveling northbound on South Georgia Street failed to stop for a red light at Southwest 15th Avenue and struck an SUV and a pickup truck that were traveling westbound through the intersection. The driver then continued northbound and struck another pickup truck in the 1200 block of South Georgia Street, where the car came to a stop, police said.

A passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity is being withheld until family members are notified. The crash remains under investigation by the Amarillo Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit, and police have not announced any charges.

Red Lights and Right-of-Way Under Texas Law

Texas law requires a driver facing a steady red signal to stop and remain stopped until the light turns green, per Chapter 544 of the Texas Transportation Code. Which driver had the light, and what led the car through the intersection and into three other vehicles, are questions the completed police investigation — not early reports — will ultimately answer.

Who Can Be Affected?

A fatal multi-vehicle crash touches many people at once. After a wreck like this one, people who may have questions about their legal options can include:

  • The family of the passenger who died — the surviving spouse, children, and parents Texas law recognizes in a wrongful death case
  • The people who were in the SUV and the two pickup trucks that were struck
  • Anyone who now faces funeral costs, medical bills, or vehicle damage because of the crash

What Kind of Claim Might Apply?

Attorneys who handle Texas fatal crash cases generally describe several paths that can apply once the facts are established:

  • A wrongful death claim — under Chapter 71 of the Texas Civil Practice & Remedies Code, the surviving spouse, children, and parents of a person killed by another’s wrongful act can generally seek compensation for their losses, and the estate can bring a survival claim for the deceased’s own damages.
  • Passenger claims — attorneys note that a passenger, or a passenger’s family, can generally bring a claim against any driver whose negligence caused the crash — including the driver of the car the passenger was riding in — typically paid through that driver’s auto liability insurance.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage — if an at-fault driver carried no insurance or too little, UM/UIM coverage on a family’s own policy can apply. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1952 requires insurers to offer this coverage on every Texas auto policy.

A lawyer can obtain the police report when it is complete, preserve evidence such as intersection camera video and vehicle event data, deal with the insurance companies, and identify every source of compensation that may apply.

Why Acting Quickly Can Matter

Texas law sets deadlines. For most wrongful death and personal-injury cases, the statute of limitations is generally two years, with limited exceptions. Evidence also fades quickly: nearby camera footage is often overwritten in days or weeks, vehicle event data can be lost when vehicles are salvaged, and witness memories fade. While the police investigation is still open, many families have a lawyer monitoring it on their behalf. The referral and the first consultation are free.
