Effective Date / Last Updated: March 3, 2021

Texas Lawyer Referral Service ("TxLRS," "we," "us," "our") respects privacy and aims to be transparent about how we handle information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard information in connection with our website (the "Site") and our services, communications, and referral processes (collectively, the "Services").

TxLRS is a lawyer referral service certified by the State Bar of Texas under Chapter 952, Occupations Code. TxLRS connects people who need legal help with qualified lawyers in our network of attorneys. The referral service is free for people seeking a lawyer. TxLRS does not provide legal services directly.

This Privacy Policy is intended to be read together with our Terms of Use. If there is a conflict between this Privacy Policy and the Terms of Use, the Terms of Use control to the extent permitted by law.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to information collected:

  • through the Site;
  • through communications with TxLRS (including phone, text message, email, and online forms);
  • during the referral request process; and
  • through your use of the Services.

This Privacy Policy does not apply to third-party websites, platforms, or services that may be linked to or used in connection with the Site or Services (for example, payment processors or analytics providers). Their policies govern their practices.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information you provide voluntarily

We may collect information you provide to us, including when you fill out forms on the Site, request information about Services, contact us, request a lawyer referral, or submit information for review. Depending on the context, this may include identifiers and contact details (such as your name, email address, phone number), information about your legal situation, and any other information you provide.

2.2 Information we collect automatically

When you visit or use the Site, we may automatically collect information such as your IP address and general location derived from your IP address, browser/device information, pages viewed, time spent, clickstream data, and other technical information used to operate, secure, and improve the Site.

2.3 Cookies and similar technologies

We may use cookies, pixels, tags, local storage, and similar technologies to operate the Site, remember preferences, understand usage, improve performance, and measure marketing effectiveness. You can often adjust your browser's cookie settings. Blocking cookies may limit Site functionality.

2.4 Communications and call/text records; call recording

We may collect and maintain records of communications with you, including inbound and outbound call records, voicemails, text messages (including automated application-to-person messaging and similar technology), emails, chat messages, and web form submissions. Phone calls may be recorded for training, quality assurance, compliance, security, and dispute resolution purposes.

2.5 SMS Communications

The Texas Lawyer Referral Service offers SMS messaging to recipients who have opted in. Messages are informational and transactional (contact confirmation, referrals, resources, request status, account status, and TFA). Mobile phone numbers collected for SMS messaging are not shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing purposes. Recipients typically receive messages no more than a few times per week, depending on how active a recipient is on our service. Message and data rates may apply. Recipients may opt out at any time by replying STOP. For help, reply HELP or contact us.

3. How We Use Information

We may use information for business and operational purposes, including to:

  • provide, administer, and improve the Site and Services;
  • process referral requests and connect you with lawyers in our network;
  • communicate with you about Services, scheduling, and related matters;

  • comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.

We may also use information for other purposes consistent with the context in which it was collected, with your consent where required by law.

4. How We Share and Disclose Information

We do not sell personal information for direct financial gain. However, we may disclose information in the following circumstances (and this section is intended to be interpreted broadly to the maximum extent permitted by law):

4.1 Lawyers in our network

When you request a referral, we may share information about you and your legal situation with lawyers in our network of attorneys for the purpose of connecting you with appropriate legal representation.

4.2 Service providers and contractors

We may share information with third parties that help us operate the Site and Services, such as hosting and IT providers, communications providers (phone/SMS/email), analytics providers, and customer support tools. These providers may process information on our behalf and under our direction.

4.3 Affiliates and organizational partners

We may share information with our affiliates or related entities for administrative, operational, and service purposes.

4.4 Legal, safety, and rights protection

We may disclose information if we believe disclosure is necessary or appropriate to:

  • comply with law, regulation, legal process, or lawful requests;

  • investigate or prevent suspected fraud, misuse, security incidents, or illegal activity; or
  • enforce our Terms of Use and other agreements.

4.5 Business transfers

If TxLRS is involved in a merger, reorganization, dissolution, financing, sale of assets, or similar transaction, information may be disclosed and transferred as part of that transaction.

4.6 With your direction or consent

We may share information at your direction or with your consent, where required.

4.7 Aggregated / de-identified information

We may disclose aggregated, anonymized, or de-identified information that does not reasonably identify you.

We may use information (including through analytics tools) to understand how the Site and Services are used and to improve outreach, operations, and effectiveness, including in ways that may indirectly benefit TxLRS.

5. Data Security

6. Data Retention

We may retain information for as long as we reasonably determine is necessary for operational purposes, compliance, dispute resolution, enforcement of agreements, and other legitimate purposes. Retention periods may vary depending on the type of information and the context in which it was collected.

7. Your Choices and Requests

Depending on your circumstances and subject to applicable law, you may request that we provide access to certain information we maintain about you, correct certain inaccurate information, or delete certain information.

We may deny or limit requests where permitted by law, including when fulfilling a request would be impractical, compromise security, conflict with legal obligations, interfere with recordkeeping, or affect the rights of others.

To make a request, send a written request to the address in Section 10. We may require reasonable steps to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests.

8. Children; Information About Minors
