What Happened on Highway 105?

At about 4 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, a Toyota 4Runner traveling west on State Highway 105 crossed into the oncoming lane and struck an eastbound Chevrolet pickup head-on between Tram Road and Keith Road in west Jefferson County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety preliminary crash investigation reported by KFDM.

The driver of the Toyota, identified by DPS as a 41-year-old man from China — a small community in west Jefferson County — died at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 33-year-old man from Sour Lake, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of suspected serious injuries, KFDM reported. 12News (KBMT) also reported that one driver was killed and another hurt in the early-Tuesday head-on wreck west of Beaumont.

Both directions of Highway 105 were shut down for the crash investigation, with Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies handling traffic control. DPS says the investigation is ongoing, and no further information has been released.

Head-On Crossover Crashes and Texas Law

Texas law generally requires drivers to keep to the right half of the roadway, under Chapter 545 of the Texas Transportation Code. When a vehicle crosses the center line, investigators typically examine why: fatigue, distraction, a medical emergency, impairment, vehicle or tire failure, and roadway conditions are among the factors crash reconstruction looks at. What DPS has described so far is preliminary — the completed crash report is what establishes the official account of a wreck like this one.

Who Can Be Affected?

A head-on crash at highway speed reaches more than the people in the vehicles. After a wreck like this, people who may have questions about their legal options can include:

  • The driver who survived with serious injuries — now facing hospital bills, recovery time, and time away from work
  • The injured driver’s household, which may be absorbing lost income while he recovers
  • The family of the man who died, who may face estate and insurance questions while the investigation is still open — and for whom preliminary findings are not the final word

What Kind of Claim Might Apply?

Attorneys who handle Texas crash injury cases generally describe several paths that can apply once the facts are established:

  • A personal injury claim — a driver seriously hurt by a vehicle that crossed into his lane can generally seek compensation for medical care, lost income, and pain through the at-fault driver’s auto liability insurance. Attorneys note that when the at-fault driver died in the crash, the claim typically proceeds against that driver’s estate, with the liability insurance still responding.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage — if the other driver carried no insurance or too little, the injured person’s own UM/UIM coverage can apply. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1952 requires insurers to offer this coverage on every Texas auto policy.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP) — the same chapter requires insurers to offer PIP, which pays medical bills and lost income regardless of who was at fault.
  • A review of the final crash report — for the family of a driver who is preliminarily reported to have crossed over, attorneys note that completed investigations occasionally identify contributing factors such as a mechanical or tire failure or a roadway condition. Many families have a lawyer review the final report before drawing conclusions.

A lawyer can obtain the crash report when it is complete, preserve evidence such as vehicle event data and any nearby video, deal with the insurance companies, and identify every source of compensation that may apply.

Why Acting Quickly Can Matter

Texas law sets deadlines. For most personal-injury cases, the statute of limitations is generally two years from the date of injury, with limited exceptions. Claims that involve a deceased driver’s estate can also involve probate steps that take time to set in motion. And evidence fades quickly: vehicle event data can be lost when cars are salvaged, roadway markings wear away, nearby camera footage is often overwritten in days or weeks, and witness memories fade. Many people choose to talk to a lawyer early for exactly these reasons — so the evidence is preserved while it still exists, and so they understand what a case may involve before responding to any insurance offer. The referral and the first consultation are free.
