What Happened on US-259 South of DeKalb?
On July 11, 2026, at approximately 3:20 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 259 about four miles south of DeKalb in Bowie County, in far northeast Texas, according to a DPS statement reported by KSLA and KLTV.
DPS said its preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a northbound Nissan Altima crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a Dodge Charger. The three occupants of the Charger — identified by DPS as Joel Ellestad, 22; Payton Butler, 24; and Ty Byrd, 20 — were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Altima, identified as Dru Wilson, 23, of DeKalb, also sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The Texarkana Gazette covered the crash the morning it happened; DPS released the victims’ names the following day. The investigation is ongoing, and DPS said no further information is available at this time.
Lane Departures and Texas Law
Texas law generally requires a driver to operate on the right half of the roadway, per Chapter 545 of the Texas Transportation Code. Why the Altima crossed the center line at 3:20 in the morning — and whether fatigue, distraction, impairment, a medical event, or something else played a role — are questions the completed DPS investigation, not the preliminary findings, will ultimately answer.
Who Can Be Affected?
A crash that takes four lives reaches four families at once. After a wreck like this one, people who may have questions about their legal options can include:
- The parents, spouses, and children of the people who died — the family members Texas law recognizes in a wrongful death case
- The estates of those who died, which can have claims of their own
- Anyone who now faces funeral costs or lost income because of the crash
What Kind of Claim Might Apply?
Attorneys who handle Texas fatal-crash cases generally describe several paths that can apply once the facts are established:
- A wrongful death claim — under Chapter 71 of the Texas Civil Practice & Remedies Code, the surviving spouse, children, and parents of a person killed by another’s wrongful act can generally seek compensation for their losses, and the estate can bring a survival claim for the deceased’s own damages.
- Claims when the at-fault driver also died — attorneys who handle these cases explain that when a driver found responsible for a crash also died, a claim can typically still proceed against that driver’s estate and auto liability insurance.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage — if an at-fault driver carried no insurance or too little for losses of this size, UM/UIM coverage on a family’s own policy can apply. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1952 requires insurers to offer this coverage on every Texas auto policy.
A lawyer can obtain the DPS crash report when it is complete, preserve evidence such as vehicle event data before the vehicles are salvaged, deal with the insurance companies, and identify every source of compensation that may apply.
Why Acting Quickly Can Matter
Texas law sets deadlines. For most wrongful death and personal-injury cases, the statute of limitations is generally two years, with limited exceptions. Evidence also fades quickly: vehicle event data can be lost when wrecked vehicles are salvaged, and witness memories fade. While the DPS investigation is still open, many families have a lawyer monitoring it on their behalf.
