What Happened?

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, five vehicles collided at the intersection of Montwood Drive and Joe Battle Boulevard, beneath the Loop 375 overpass in East El Paso, according to KVIA. At least one vehicle rolled over in the collision, KFOX14 reported.

The El Paso Fire Department declared a multi-casualty incident and called in FireSTAR, its medical helicopter. Six people were taken to the hospital — three with life-threatening injuries and three with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to fire officials cited by KTSM. TxDOT closed the westbound lanes of Montwood and the northbound lanes of Joe Battle for much of the afternoon; all lanes reopened shortly after 5 p.m. As of this writing, police have not publicly released what caused the crash, and no fault has been determined.

Who Can Be Affected?

A five-vehicle crash touches many lives at once: the drivers and passengers in every vehicle, their families — suddenly juggling hospital visits, missed work, and insurance calls — and witnesses and bystanders at a busy intersection. Serious injuries from a high-impact collision or rollover can mean long hospital stays, surgeries, and rehabilitation. And even people who walked away can discover later that they were hurt: neck, back, and head injuries in particular sometimes take days to fully show themselves, which is one reason people involved in a wreck like this often get checked by a doctor even if they initially feel fine.

What Kind of Claim Might Apply?

Multi-vehicle crashes are among the most complicated injury cases, attorneys who handle them say, because several insurance companies are usually involved and each may point at someone else. Texas follows a comparative-fault system, so sorting out who bears what share of responsibility — using the crash report, witness statements, vehicle damage, and sometimes intersection cameras or vehicle data — can directly change what each injured person recovers. Because the cause of this crash has not been released, no one can say today who, if anyone, was at fault. That is exactly the kind of question the police investigation, and lawyers for the people involved, will work through.

For families of the most seriously injured, experienced injury attorneys describe helping in practical ways: identifying every policy that may apply (including underinsured-motorist coverage), preserving evidence before it disappears, handling adjusters, and documenting the full cost of the injury — not just the first hospital bill.

Why Acting Quickly Can Matter

Texas law generally gives people two years from the date of a crash to file an injury lawsuit — but the practical deadlines are often much shorter. Insurance policies require prompt notice, intersection-camera and dashcam footage can be overwritten in days or weeks, and witness memories fade. It is best to talk to a lawyer before giving a recorded statement to any insurance company, and finding out where you stand costs nothing — our referral service is free.
