What Happened at Logistics Way and NE HK Dodgen Loop?

At about 8:02 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Temple police officers were called to a crash involving a motorcycle and a vehicle in the area of Logistics Way and NE HK Dodgen Loop in Temple, in Bell County, according to a Temple Police Department news release.

Police said preliminary information indicates the vehicle was traveling westbound and attempting to make a left turn when it collided with an eastbound motorcycle, KWTX reported. The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital, where Justice of the Peace Larry Wilkey pronounced the rider deceased. The driver of the vehicle was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The department’s Traffic Reconstruction Unit remained on scene Wednesday night, and the crash remains under investigation. The rider’s identity had not been publicly released as of this writing, and authorities have not announced any findings about fault.

Left Turns and Right-of-Way Under Texas Law

Texas law addresses left turns directly: under Section 545.152 of the Texas Transportation Code, a driver turning left at an intersection must yield the right-of-way to a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction that is close enough to be a hazard. Whether that rule was followed in any particular crash is a question the completed police reconstruction — not early reports — answers. Left-turn collisions are a well-documented danger for riders: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in fatal two-vehicle crashes between a motorcycle and another vehicle, a large share involve the other vehicle turning left while the motorcycle goes straight, according to NHTSA motorcycle safety data.

Who Can Be Affected?

A fatal motorcycle crash reaches an entire family. After a wreck like this, people who may have questions about their legal options can include:

  • The spouse, children, and parents of the rider who died — the family members Texas law recognizes in a wrongful death case
  • A household that depended on the rider’s income and now faces funeral costs and lost earnings
  • Anyone seriously hurt in a similar left-turn collision — among the most common serious motorcycle crashes in Texas

What Kind of Claim Might Apply?

Attorneys who handle Texas fatal-crash cases generally describe several paths that can apply once the facts are established:

  • A wrongful death claim — under Chapter 71 of the Texas Civil Practice & Remedies Code, the surviving spouse, children, and parents of a person killed by another’s wrongful act can generally seek compensation for their losses, and the estate can bring a survival claim for the deceased’s own damages.
  • The at-fault driver’s liability insurance — a claim typically proceeds against the auto liability coverage of the driver investigators find responsible.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage — if the at-fault driver carried no insurance or too little, UM/UIM coverage on the family’s own policy can apply. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1952 requires insurers to offer this coverage on every Texas auto policy.

A lawyer can obtain the crash report when it is complete, preserve evidence such as nearby camera video and vehicle event data, deal with the insurance companies, and identify every source of compensation that may apply. Attorneys who handle motorcycle cases also note that riders and their families often face unfair bias in claims — an experienced lawyer can push back with the reconstruction evidence.

Why Acting Quickly Can Matter

Texas law sets deadlines. For most wrongful death and personal-injury cases, the statute of limitations is generally two years, with limited exceptions. Evidence also fades quickly: nearby camera footage is often overwritten in days or weeks, vehicle event data can be lost when vehicles are salvaged, and witness memories fade. While the Traffic Reconstruction Unit’s investigation is still open, many families have a lawyer monitoring it on their behalf. The referral and the first consultation are free.
