What Happened on I-20 in Ward County?

A chain-reaction pileup involving 11 vehicles shut down Interstate 20 in Ward County in the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2026, killing one person and injuring several others, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety and reporting by First Alert 7/KOSA (CBS7).

DPS said troopers responded around 4:45 a.m. to the westbound lanes of I-20 near mile marker 51, close to Barstow and the Reeves County line. Investigators said the driver of a Freightliner semi-truck failed to control the truck’s speed and rear-ended a vehicle being towed behind a Nissan Rogue. The impact set off a chain-reaction crash that ultimately involved 11 vehicles, including several that were traveling together westbound and towing additional vehicles. DPS noted the roadway was wet and skies were cloudy from rain at the time of the crash.

Multiple vehicles caught fire in the crash, and several people were hurt, DPS said. A passenger riding in a Ford F-250 died from injuries sustained in the wreck. The Freightliner’s driver was taken to Reeves County Hospital with what DPS described as minor injuries. The investigation remains ongoing.
