What Happened on I-30 in Garland?

Late on the night of Sunday, June 21, 2026, a crash involving an 18-wheeler shut down Interstate 30 near the President George Bush Turnpike in Garland, just east of Dallas. According to the Garland Police Department, a sedan and the 18-wheeler were traveling westbound on I-30 when they collided around 10:15 p.m. The impact sent the tractor-trailer into the center concrete barrier, and its cargo — rolls of paper estimated to weigh about 6,000 pounds each — was thrown over the barrier and into the eastbound lanes.

An eastbound SUV carrying four people, including two children ages 5 and 12, then struck the cargo. Police said a pregnant mother in the SUV lost her unborn baby and was left in serious condition, and that both children were also in serious condition. The conditions of the truck driver and the sedan driver were not released. Police said no charges had been filed and that the cause of the first collision remains under investigation.

All lanes of I-30 were shut down for hours and reopened by about 8:55 a.m. the next morning after crews cleared the heavy paper rolls and wreckage from the highway.

Why Loose Cargo and Big Trucks Are So Dangerous

A fully loaded 18-wheeler can weigh 20 to 30 times as much as a passenger car, and a single roll of industrial paper can weigh several thousand pounds. When heavy cargo comes loose and crosses a highway, it can strike people who had nothing to do with the original crash — as appears to have happened here, when a family driving in the opposite direction was hit. The U.S. Department of Transportation tracks how often people in smaller vehicles are killed or seriously hurt in crashes with large trucks in its Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts report. Federal rules also require commercial freight to be properly secured, and when cargo is not tied down correctly, more than one company may share responsibility.

Who Can Be Affected?

A crash like this one can affect more people than just the two drivers who first collided. The people who may have legal options after the I-30 crash can include:

  • The family in the SUV that was struck by the cargo
  • Drivers and passengers in any other vehicle hit by debris or wreckage
  • People who were injured trying to avoid the cargo or the stopped traffic
  • Families who have lost a loved one, including an expectant parent
  • Motorists whose vehicles were damaged even if injuries seemed minor at first

Because a crash involving a commercial truck and loose cargo can involve several drivers and companies, each of these groups can face a very different legal situation — one reason these cases are rarely as simple as they first appear.

What Kind of Claim Might Apply?

Truck-crash cases are often more complicated than ordinary car wrecks. Experienced truck-accident attorneys generally describe a few common paths:

  • Driver negligence — when a driver caused the first collision or was driving unsafely for the conditions.
  • Cargo-securement failures — federal and state rules require freight to be loaded and tied down so it cannot come loose; when it does, the carrier or the company that loaded it may share fault.
  • Trucking-company liability — for how a company hires, trains, supervises, schedules, or maintains its drivers and equipment.
  • Wrongful death — Texas law allows certain close family members to bring a claim when a death is caused by another’s negligence (see the Texas wrongful death statute).

A truck-accident lawyer can investigate what caused the wreck, obtain the truck’s data and the carrier’s records, bring in crash-reconstruction experts, and identify every company that may share responsibility. Sorting out which claims apply — and who is responsible — is exactly the kind of thing a lawyer does for you, so you do not have to face it alone.

Why Acting Quickly Can Matter

Time matters in these cases for two reasons. First, Texas law sets deadlines for filing a claim. For most personal-injury and wrongful-death cases, the statute of limitations is generally two years from the date of the injury or death, with limited exceptions. Second, the evidence that matters most in a truck case — a commercial truck’s electronic logging device, its engine “black box” data, dash-cam video, cargo-loading records, and maintenance logs — can be overwritten or lost in the weeks after a crash.

Many people choose to talk to a lawyer early for exactly that reason: so a preservation letter can be sent before key records disappear, and so the facts are documented while they are still fresh. It is also wise to understand what a case may be worth before accepting any insurance offer. The referral and the first consultation are free.
