What Happened at T.C. Jester and Sablechase?

At about 4 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, a red Toyota heading north on T.C. Jester Boulevard allegedly ran a red light at Sablechase Drive in northwest Harris County and struck a white Toyota RAV4, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office as reported by ABC13.

The driver of the RAV4 was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies said he was an Uber driver in his 50s who lived in the neighborhood and was leaving for work when the crash happened, FOX 26 Houston reported. His identity has not yet been released.

The driver of the red Toyota was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, ABC13 reported. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said speed is believed to have been a factor. Investigators also found open containers inside the red vehicle, but authorities say it is too early to conclude whether that driver was intoxicated. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges had been announced as of this writing.

Red Lights, Open Containers, and Texas Law

Texas law requires a driver facing a steady red signal to stop and yield, under Section 544.007 of the Texas Transportation Code. When investigators report that a driver ran a red light, the completed crash report — not early statements — establishes the official account. Where open containers are found, Texas law separately addresses possession of open alcohol containers in a vehicle under Chapter 49 of the Texas Penal Code; whether alcohol actually played a role in this crash is a question authorities say has not been answered yet. Toxicology and reconstruction findings typically take weeks.

Who Can Be Affected?

A fatal intersection crash reaches far beyond the intersection itself. After a wreck like this, people who may have questions about their legal options can include:

  • The spouse, children, and parents of the man who died — the family members Texas law recognizes in a wrongful death case
  • A household that depended on his income as a rideshare driver and now faces funeral costs and lost earnings
  • Anyone hurt in a similar crash caused by a driver who ran a light — intersection wrecks are among the most common serious crashes in Texas

What Kind of Claim Might Apply?

Attorneys who handle Texas fatal-crash cases generally describe several paths that can apply once the facts are established:

  • A wrongful death claim — under Chapter 71 of the Texas Civil Practice & Remedies Code, the surviving spouse, children, and parents of a person killed by another’s wrongful act can generally seek compensation for their losses, and the estate can bring a survival claim for the deceased’s own damages.
  • The at-fault driver’s liability insurance — a claim typically proceeds against the auto liability coverage of the driver investigators find responsible.
  • Rideshare-related coverage questions — because the man who died drove for Uber and was heading out to work, attorneys note that the insurance picture in rideshare cases can depend on whether the driver was logged into the app at the time. Texas requires transportation network companies and their drivers to carry specific insurance under Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1954. A lawyer can determine which coverage applies.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage — if the at-fault driver carried no insurance or too little, UM/UIM coverage on the family’s own policy can apply. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1952 requires insurers to offer this coverage on every Texas auto policy.

A lawyer can obtain the crash report when it is complete, preserve evidence such as intersection and dash-camera video and vehicle event data, deal with the insurance companies, and identify every source of compensation that may apply.

Why Acting Quickly Can Matter

Texas law sets deadlines. For most wrongful death and personal-injury cases, the statute of limitations is generally two years, with limited exceptions. Evidence also fades quickly: nearby camera footage is often overwritten in days or weeks, vehicle event data can be lost when cars are salvaged, and witness memories fade. In a case where intoxication is being investigated, the toxicology results and the completed report can matter a great deal — many families have a lawyer monitoring the investigation while it is still open. The referral and the first consultation are free.
